Welcome to Geolife Region
The GeoLife Region Initiative was launched in 2013 to make Gävleborg region Europe’s Geographic Information System capital and an internationally recognized region for the implementation of geo-technologies in the advancement of health and wellbeing.
GeoLife Region is organized into four distinct platforms:
- Research, academia and competence supply
Research, academia and supply of competence Platform
On an aggregate level, the platform will create a context that contributes to an environment attractive to researchers, which in turn contributes to inspirational applied research in areas that effect the GeoLife Region’s environments.
Inspirational and productive research and innovative higher education will, in turn, inspire and influence educational organizations and companies to create additional vocational training and other innovative educations that will contribute labor force in order to develop the area in the Innovation, Incubation and Acceleration platforms.
Viable research projects, a strong academy and a modern approach to competence maintenance will in turn encourage innovators, entrepreneurs and industrialists to establish a presence on GeoLife Region’s various arenas.
The platform is divided into four work packages:
- Supply of competence
- Strategic work for a long-term development of the research area of sustainable cities and communities.
Research – The aim of the work package is to create a viable research environment within the GeoLife Region’s focus area. This is to be done in collaboration with the regional academy’s (University of Gävles) research track – Sustainable Urban Communities. Note that in the long term, the GeoLife Region will seek other national and international collaborations with universities outside the administrative region. However, this should always be done with the regional education institution as a starting point. To strengthen the research, the work is focused on different types of efforts:
Seed funding to start new cross-disciplinary research projects that will lead to additional external funding and more research funding for the area.
Activities designed to act as catalysts for additional interdisciplinary research projects meant to generate interest in the area and promote academic exchange and research cooperation between the cross-disciplinary areas regionally, nationally and internationally.
Activities designed to contribute to the creation of new cross-disciplinary courses and higher educations within the academy.
Activities designed to contribute to the creation of new types of vocational training and other studies to ensure that more people become available in the labor market in relevant areas within a relatively short time. Particular focus is set on gender equality and inclusion.
Pursuing long-term strategic initiatives aimed at long-term stability and growth within research and academia. Examples of such work may be to lay the foundations for future opportunities to build institutes and/or competence centers.
At an aggregate level, the Innovation platform will contribute to a context that creates an environment attractive to innovators and product developers. They will in turn contribute to innovations, services, processes, organizational changes and products in areas that effect GeoLife Region’s environments and development in a positive way.
Inspirational and innovative events and activities in the Innovation Platform help inspire and influence educational organizations, academia and research to create complementary vocational training and other innovative educations that will contribute to the development of the areas in the Incubation and Acceleration platforms.
Viable innovation, a strong academy and modern approach to supply of competence will in turn attract innovators, entrepreneurs and industrialists to establish a presence on GeoLife Region´s various arenas.
In addition to innovations, the platform will contribute to the development of innovation-promoting events both regionally, nationally and internationally, such as developing the conditions for data-driven innovation, dealing with policy issues to promote innovation and driving a ”no blame” culture in the innovation world. The Innovation platform is designed to promote innovation collaborations and alliances. This will create a GeoLife Region that will be one of the most attractive environments and arenas where policymakers, game changers, innovators, public organizations and innovation promoters meet and work together to contribute to GeoLife Region’s overall vision.
The innovation platform is divided into the following six work packages:
- The Arena for data-driven innovation
- Innovation infrastructure
- Collaborative projects to create new innovations
- Innovation-promoting activities
- National collaboration to drive innovation
- Efforts to drive an innovation culture based on openness, generosity, equality, which is inclusive and drives a ”no blame” culture.
The arena for data-driven Innovation
The Arena should be a regionally, nationally and internationally attractive arena for data driven innovation. In this arena, players gather to drive and develop the conditions, projects and efforts around data driven innovation. The participants gather around different issues and create results, research projects, innovations, products, policies and organizations that promote data-driven innovation. The Arena for data driven innovation is the largest and most important part of the Gävle Innovation Arena.
Collection of data lakes and digital twins – The Gävle Innovation Arena contains a data lake where the arena’s actors work together to constantly deepen the lake. Another way to describe the higher purpose is for the data lake to become a perfect digital twin of the Gävle Innovation Arena reality test bed. Deep data lakes and digital twins form the basis for driving sustainable urban development, cognitive urban planning models and AI solutions. It also provides basic prerequisites for new applications by using, for example, mixed reality technology.
The mere collection of data to the data lake/the digital twin is an innovation-promoting activity, as the activity itself leads to new discoveries being made in the problems surrounding data collection and making data available. Furthermore, it creates conditions for discussions between organizations and authorities in different constellations around the policy driven management of data driven innovation and development, especially the issues of data authenticity, origin, personal integrity and ownership.
To create a ”perfect” digital twin, it is necessary to collect a variety of data in the form of open data. All types of data are affected, i.e. both data that is traditionally linked to the community building process, but also data that is not traditionally linked to these processes, such as data from social media, business and other players that are not traditionally involved in the community building process.
Data security and personal privacy issues in data driven innovation – When data is collected in data lakes, which is one of the pillars of data driven innovation, the risk increases exponentially to create conditions that jeopardize personal security and integrity, meaning that the combination of different data can create personalized data. In order for this data to be made available in data lakes, different methods and architectures must be tested to de-personalize data before being made available in the data lake/digital twin. In this part of the work package, the players handle issues of technical, process oriented and policy oriented nature in order to build the future conditions around data driven innovation.
Sustainable and secure architecture for data lakes and digital twins – Reality is changing and shifting second by second, which means that data lakes/digital twins must follow that trend. To enable this, completely new architectures must be applied in conjunction with the formation of sustainable development of the data lake/twin itself. Therefore the architecture must facilitate for the data source to be conceptually/virtually integrated into the data sea model and its architecture. In the very long term, the work with the data lake and the digital twin must create conditions for national structures to promote security around data lakes, so-called conceptual national demilitarized zones.
The innovation infrastructure in the platform consists of both a coherent ecosystem understanding at an aggregate level, a loosely assembled collaborative infrastructure and Gävle Innovation Arenas collaborative partners, an actual infrastructure with green IoT infrastructures, visualization systems, development platforms, block chain test beds, de-identification systems and virtual/actual data lakes. A well-functioning and rich innovation infrastructure like the one in the Gävle Innovation Arena is essential and a fundamental prerequisite to drive excellence and innovation in computer-driven innovation that creates human health and well-being in the smart, sustainable and viable city.
Activities to develop different actors to apply different parts around innovation – Data-driven innovation requires that many actors understand how to apply the future/present opportunities in future solutions. Therefore, a number of activities are planned and conducted in order to promote this. This part of the work package includes activities such as the block chain bus, programming evenings, try-out courses and inspiration evenings and workshops.
Collaboration project to create new innovations – Gävle Innovation Arena as an infrastructure, a meeting place and a tool creates conditions for innovation projects to drive innovations and solutions. These collaborations can arise through the work at the meeting point itself. However, these collaborative projects are usually the result of the co-creating, user-centric and needs driven innovation locks as described below.
Innovation-promoting activities and projects – Gävle Innovation Arena uses Living Lab’s basic principles in the form of user-centric innovation development. In order for the progress of innovations to be relevant to the development of the area, it is also necessary that the progress is based on pre-identified needs. User-centric and demand driven innovation is a strategic position to promote the development of an equal and inclusive host. Innovations must be driven in such a way that they enable and include. That is, the ability of man to apply and take advantage of innovation should not depend on financial opportunities to access hardware or the ability to understand the technology or the solution. Man should not understand technology, technology must understand man. In this activity in the work package, innovation locks are set up for co-creative citizens in the area, such as collaboration planning (Södra Hemlingby), community building and public transports etc. This package also includes activities such as innovation camps and similar activities.
National collaboration to drive innovation is applied to create international competitiveness around data driven innovation and other innovation, in order to promote human health and well being in the sustainable and smart city. Therefore, alliances and collaborations must be established between national innovation arenas that can collaborate around national and international progress and the driving force of data driven innovation. In order for GeoLife Region to be one of the most attractive environments in the area, collaborations must be created e.g with other innovation arenas in order to leverage on each other’s activities, infrastructure and operations. The players in this collaboration will be dynamic and mobile. Current examples are the initiation of collaborations and experience sharing with Urban ICT Arena, DigitalWell Arena, Valencia ICT cluster (Redit) and ICT Latvia Cluster (innovation express).
Efforts to drive an innovation culture. The efforts are based on openness, generosity, equality, they are inclusive and drive a ”no blame” culture. Driving an effective culture of innovation means promoting openness and a generosity culture by receiving visits and sharing knowledge with other organizations and arenas. Furthermore, workshops and lecture series will be run in a ”no blame” culture.
The purpose of the incubation platform is to utilize the innovations, research and ideas created in the other platforms. The incubation platform is for the most part an aggregate infrastructure where the collaboration infrastructure and the process of collaboration between the various players in the ecosystem are made visible and made clear.
The incubation platform consists of a work package with the following sub-activities
- Clarification of the incubation environment
- Creating of processes to support smart specialization in incubation
The main driver of the growth engine is achieved by already established products and companies through new applications, new customer segments, new markets and new partnerships. The acceleration platform provides an infrastructure for this. The need for an accelerator system specific to GeoLife Region is limited, as accelerator systems are already well developed from a national perspective. However, there are clarifications and bridges that need to be created for a viable environment.
The Accelerator platform consists of a work package and is developed with the following activities:
- Identification and establishment of collaborative networks with national accelerators.
- Mapping and process clarification of existing accelerator structures which collaborate with GeoLife Region partners.
- Complementary functions of the accelerator structure for micro enterprises, as their structure does not exist in the same way as for other types of enterprises.
The Enabling Organization
The hub of the GeoLife Region organization consists of the players in the regional management system, together with industry and public sector. Future Position X as initiative coordinator has a relatively small organization with a process leader for the initiative and a process manager for each platform. The process leaders together with a few administrative and financial support functions form the operational organization for GeoLife Region. The Future Position X board is the strategic function for the development of GeoLife Region. The main functions of GeoLife Region are represented by the board.
The regional management system, the operational organization and the board are determined to create the best conditions for:
